International Projects - India Cataract Project

In 2002, Middletown Rotary joined with the Rotary Club of Aurangabad East (India) to provide sight restoring surgery to Indians with cataract blindness.  Together with a Rotary International Foundation Matching Grant, the clubs will help restore sight to 491 of India's poorest citizens.  The Aurangabad East Club will coordinate intraocular lens transplant surgery for those who could not otherwise afford this treatment.  Middletown Rotary held a raffle and collected money from its members to help fund a portion of the grant.

Although generally treatable in the U.S., cataract blindness is common in areas where individuals are too poor to afford eye exams or corrective surgery.  India has about 50% of the world's cataract blindness.  The Middletown/Aurangabad East project is one of countless Rotary initiatives to reduce the incidents of such preventable blindness.

The Rotary Club of Aurangabad East meets Tuesdays at the Hotel Ajanta Aurangabad.
