President Jim called the club to order at 12:15. Maureen Brubaker provided an inspirational reading for Reflections.
Club Guests: Ken Fazzone (Gary Szewczyk), Linda Fish and Pat Tully (Linda Santangelo), Melissa Zurn (Annette Marginelli), M.T. Rodis (Cheryl Duey).
Visiting Rotarian: Jill Deproto (California)
Announcements/Reminders: Please make your Paul Harris Sustaining Membership donations. Remember Amazing Grace food pantry (supplies are low!). Cheryl said International Committee will meet following next week's meeting. Bob Crawford reviewed several fundraising possibilities to supplement or replace existing activities. Laura Falt and Sue Murphy discussed the possibility of the club sponsoring a holiday pie sale, the proceeds of which will go to the Turkey Drive. Sue stated that our club funding of this project has declined in recent years; we should have a goal of being #1 among all the participating clubs! Jim reminded members that the board will meet Wednesday at Joe Marino's shoreline villa. He also announced that a delegation from South Africa will be visiting the district in March. Anyone interested in hosting members of the delegation should see Jim.
King of Clubs Card Game: Gary Gomola drew both winning tickets (but, alas, to no avail)!
High/Low Game: I missed who won high (but it was Aces and Kings); Rich Carella won low (A-3-4-5-7). Both winnings went to Amazing Grace.
Happy Dollars: My apologies, but I missed this part.
Garry Mullaney started a challenge for Amazing Grace that yielded $288 from the club! Great job everyone!
Program: Cheryl introduced our guest speaker, Nancy Cappello. Nancy gave a very moving and inspiring talk on breast cancer awareness and the importance of early detection. After being diagnosed and ultimately successfully treated for breast cancer, Nancy embarked on a project to raise awareness about early detection through ultrasound testing of women with dense breast tissue. Breast density is one of the strongest predictors of the failure of mammography screening to detect cancers in all cases. Two-thirds of pre menopausal women and one-quarter of post menopausal women have dense breast tissue. Women who have extremely dense breast tissue are at a 4-6 times greater risk of developing breast cancer. More than one-third of breast cancers are detected late, with lower odds for recovery. Ultimately, Nancy was successful in championing a new state law in 2009 requiring insurance companies to pay for ultrasound screening for women with dense breast tissue. Members are encouraged to find more information on this important topic at Nancy's website: www.areyoudense.org.
As always, we ended the meeting with the Four Way Test.
Respectfully Submitted
