Who We Are

Rotary is service-driven.  Belonging to a Rotary club gives men and women an organized outlet for contributing to their community.

Founded in 1905, Rotary is the world's first service organization.  The Rotary motto is "Service Above Self".

Rotary has a global network of 1.2 million members in nearly 29,000 clubs in more than 150 countries.

Rotary members meet weekly to plan a wide variety of service activities.  Rotary clubs are autonomous and can determine their own service projects based on local needs and the interests and abilities of members.

Rotary clubs are nonreligious, nongovernmental, and open to every race, culture, and creed.  Club membership represents a cross-section of local business and professional leaders.

Rotarians around the world strive to conduct their business and personal lives according to the Rotary Four Way Test:

  1. Is it the truth?

  2. Is it fair to all concerned?

  3. Will it build good will and better friendships?

  4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Club History

The early history of Rotary in Middletown is a little unclear as to actual start up dates.  We know that the first organizational meetings were held in January of 1925, that the actual date of acceptance by Rotary International was March 16, 1925 and that the Charter Night was April 28, 1925.  The 75th anniversary of Rotary in Middletown was held at the Wadsworth Mansion in Middletown on May 2, 2000.  What follows is an edited version of remarks given at that occasion by Biff Shaw.  (Click here for text)
